Budget kitchen stool makeover

The kitchen stool transformation

I don’t know about you but when I come back from holidays I go into crazy updating, organising and re-decorating mode. Maybe it’s being exposed to so many new things that gets my head over-excited or maybe it’s just renewed energy from being on holidays. Whatever it is, I’ve had a lot of it in the last week.

I’ve gone storage crazy and re-organised my baking supplies. I did a little cull of my recipe books and wardrobe and even took on my first furniture makeover project. I got these stools for the bargain price of $30 each a couple years ago and have been giving them the ‘one day I’ll give you a makeover’ look for about 18 months. On Tuesday night I decided that Wednesday was the day they got a new look.

Before

They were a little bit boring I have to admit and really screamed make me over!

Painting the stool

I started with just one stool which I’m glad I did. I realised half way through the first coat of paint that I wouldn’t have enough for the two of them. I think stool two will get it’s white coat from a spray bottle. It would be a lot easier and faster although it only took about 20 minutes to paint the stool.

I turned it upside down on a big piece of paper and them went to work painting it.

I used a glossy white acrylic and coated it with two layers leaving about 2 hours in-between coats to let it dry. Then it was time for the seat to get its colour.

Mod-podgeing the seat

I was going to sew covers for the top of the stools, that way if I didn’t like them I could change them easily. Then I had the brilliant (and much easier) plan of mod-podging the fabric to the top. Yes I had to commit to the fabric but I knew the result would look a lot more finished than the sewn version.

The day before I was at Spotlight and much to my delight discovered that all the summer fabrics were on sale. Lets just say I didn’t walk out of there empty handed. This little piece of fabric cost me about $1. Seeing as I had everything else I needed on hand, the whole project came to the grand total of $1.

I cut the fabric in a square with enough to cover over the sides of the top of the stool. Then I used a sponge to spread the mod podge over the top of the stool and pressed the fabric on top. I just used a regular old dish sponge and it worked well. I spread more mod podge on top and smoothed it out as best I could. Yes I know that it’s a little bit warped but I don’t want to be too perfect (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it).

To finish it off, I cut around the outside of the fabric leaving just enough of a border to be able to fold it under the seat. Then, you guessed it, I mod-podged it down too.

After

I left it to dry for a few hours and then voila, a new stool for about $1! I’m rather impressed if I don’t say so myself. Now it’s off to Bunnings I go for some more paint.

What about you? Have you taken on any little makeover projects recently?
