Homemade baby wipes

Before I became a mum, I was going to be an ‘earth mother.’ Not in a hippy, wear cloth clothes and let my armpit hairs grow sort of earth mother but I was going to do everything naturally.

Everything would be organic. I would make every meal that passed through their beautiful little cherub lips. No artificial creation was every going to touch my perfect baby’s skin.

I would learn how to make baby wipes, use cloth nappies and only ever wash bub’s clothes in baby and earth friendly washing detergent.

I’m yet to meet anyone who is exactly the type of mum they thought they’d be.

I’d be really interested to meet anyone who is and even then, I’d have to admit that I’d be skeptical about their honesty.

So it’s fair to say that my kids watch TV (they were NEVER going to), have had fairy bread for dinner (in a one-off moment of sheer desperation) and had their little bums wiped with supermarket wipes pretty much from when they were born.

Until the little man was about two.

I thought that making baby wipes was something difficult.

I also had visions of the wipes ripping… yeah I think you get where that one was going.

Then a friend told me she’d been making her own wipes for years.

So I gave it a go.

I am a convert!

Why I love DIY Baby Wipes

  • They’re super easy to make. I’m talking about 5 minutes to make a couple of packets and the hardest part is a bit of cutting.
  • They’re strong (no sticking your finger through them).
  • They’re effective. They do the trick even if you didn’t realise there was a dirty nappy to change for a little too long (you know what I’m talking about).
  • They’re really inexpensive (even compared to the cheapest wipes you can get).
  • They’re really good on my sensitive fingers.
  • They are free from any harmful additives or fragrances.
  • There’s less waste than buying individual packets of wipes.

The unexpected bonus was that for the first year in as long as I can remember, I didn’t get winter eczema or cracked fingers.

Some years I get it so bad my fingers bleed (yeah gross I know).

It took me a long time to learn that there are actually some pretty nasty chemicals found in inexpensive babywipes.

The nastiest of which is ‘fragrance’ which is basically a word that means chemical concoction we don’t have to tell you the contents of because it’s our ‘secret’ recipe.

Homemade baby wipes use paper towel as the cloth. Unfortunately, some paper towels do contain bleaches and other chemicals.

If you want to completely avoid these, then you could use bamboo cloths. Obviously they would need to be washed hygienically if you’re using them for number twos.

Alternatively, you could just use them for wees and use the paper towel, disposable version for poops.

Now I know that paper towel can have nasties in it, but, I still feel like it’s better than some of the chemical-loaded baby wipes, plus… they cost a lot less to make than to buy.

How to make baby wipes

You will need:

  • 1 roll Viva paper towel (or another tough one)
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tbsp castile soap
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil – antibacterial and moisturising
  • a few drops of 100% pure essential oil (I use lavender and tea tree) it’s really important that the essential oils you use are 100% pure or they might contain potentially dangerous synthetic ingredients
  • a container (I use a 1kg yoghurt tub)
  • sharp knife

How to:

  1. Slice the paper towel down the middle.
  2. Squash each half into a tub.
  3. Mix the boiling water, castile soap, coconut oil and essential oil and divide evenly, pour over each of the paper towel rolls.
  4. Leave to rest for a few minutes then pull the middle roll out and pop the lid on.
